A Mental Snack (30)

Share your thoughts...

"Your memory is a monster; you forget - it doesn't. It simply files things away. It keeps things for you, or hides things from you- and summons them to your recall with a will of its own. You think you have a memory; but it has you!" ~ John Irving

Do you believe that memory is a monster? Is it something else to you? Do your memories ever haunt you? Ever wish you could have done something different? Tell us your stories of your worst/best memories in the comments below.

I'll never forget the dog next door Zane. To this day I wish I had the guts to defy my parents and call the SPCA. That beautiful dog deserved a better life...
I was a doormat of a ten year old, thank goodness I grew out of that.

Wow, that's kind of deep. I don't have memories hunt me (at least I try not to). The worst memory I've had was a nightmare when my family left me at the circus (it sounds funny, but to an eight-year-old, it was pretty scary).

Most of the ghost-monsters that haunt my storehouse are best left undisturbed. They sleep lightly....I've written about a few of them under Childhood Tales...

Something dark to share, I'd have to say words. Either given or received. I once, as a child, said something to my mother that as an adult, I know caused her pain. She, in turn, said many things to me that caused not only pain, but a mind set that I still haven't overcome. Vague I know, but...

I constantly wish I had done things differently. They come back at the most inconvenient times, too. It's quite annoying. Monster is an apt description. :)

Oh gosh. YES. My memory is a MONSTER. And it has a will ALL of its own.

memories are both, the best and the worst. yet the great thing about memories... the hidden ones only appear when you are ready to face them. the pleasant one's, well, they enhance and colour our day beautiful!

Bad memories pop up, but it's not always a terrible thing because they're a reminder of things I shouldn't do or people to avoid.

Hey, Nicole!

That sounds horrible. I hate abuse whether the victim is an animal, child, or an adult. It's not right to hurt another living thing. I hope that dog has a better life now.

Hello, Carolyn!

I agree with you there that circuses are creepy, whether you are eight years old or over a hundred years old. People who dress up as clowns just give me the creeps. Some memories do hunt you down and try to make you see them for what they are, but we should often times leave those memories alone and in the past.

Stay strong and never fear anything, even if it is a creepy clown. Write on!

Hey, The Words Crafter!

I agree that most childhood monsters should be left undisturbed and in the past, but they often come back to haunt you at your weakest moments. I will try to find sometime to read those Childhood Tales on your blog.

Also, it's okay to not go too deep into the dark abyss of your mind, where the worst of fears and pains are kept. I think you're a brave person to share with us that you've gone through some tough times. I have some family problems, as well, in my own home with my father and aunt that lives with me. Arguments happen every once in a while, but mostly it is calm and high in tension around us all.

Write on and thank you for sharing!

Hello, RosieC!

I think everyone could agree that they have moments in their life they could rewind and do over, just take back completely, or wish never happened. They are those moments that boggle our minds 'til the end of our lives about what could've happened if things were done differently. It is quite annoying.

Write on!

Hey, Tabitha!

I think John Irving hit the description right on the spot with the analogy of calling memory a monster, because it truly is. It has the power to eat us alive sometimes from the inside out. I hope that your monster isn't biting too much though.

Write on and keep your memory monster on a leash!

Shadow! I'm glad to see your comment! :D

Memories are our reminders of things we've failed and conquered. There are the good ones and bad ones. The bad ones show our weaknesses and force us to improve. The good ones show us that we have the ability to conquer.

Write on and conquer the world!

Hello, Medeia!

You're right that sometimes bad memories can be reminders of things we should never do, like talking about a certain subject with a person or to avoid certain things/people.

Write on and dodge those memories!
