A Mental Snack (32)

Share your thoughts...

"The most solid advice for a writer is this, I think: Try to learn to breathe deeply, really to taste food when you eat, and when you sleep really to sleep. try as much as possible to be wholly alive with all your might, and when you laugh, laugh like hell. And when you get angry, get good and angry. Try to be alive. You will be dead soon enough." ~ William Saroyan

Why do you think we are alive in this world?

Well, Vatche, that's a potentially loaded question. I'll say this-anyone that can answer that question accurately can solve about all the world's problems....

thanks for peeping into my blog, but why didn't you leave a comment out there?
I would appreciate it very much if you did!

oooh, loaded question. There are so many answers but it's definitely food for thought.

I agree with the Word Crafter, this is a very loaded question with a very personal answer.

I like this part of the quote: "Try to be alive. You will be dead soon enough."

I guess it best to stop asking why I am alive and just live it.

I love this quote. I think we are alive to live well. That means living fully. Being honest in all our actions and ways and living according to who we really are inside. But to do that takes a life time because you have to know yourself very well to really live according to who we are. The world has enough people living 'normal' lives. I want more. That is how I know I am alive :)

PS- get that dog :)

Hmmm...

I suppose we are alive in this world so that we may keep each other alive.

To be honest, I do not know why we live. What our purpose is here on this earth. But it would make sense that the reason why we remain alive is because other people--our families, friends, inspirations... are what keep us rooted to this earth.

So, therefore... if nothing else, then as restated, perhaps we are alive in this world to keep each other alive.

As an experiment? Heehee. I like the theory in The Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but don't necessarily beleive it. ;)

I'rm almost 99.99% certain we're alive to sit alone in our parent's basement blasting industrial rock while we play video games and eat junk food all day long. Prostitutes and drugs are optional.

I am in this world to make a change in someone else's life. That's my personal answer.

I love this quote and it reminds me of something my poetry instructor once told me. I had just written a poem titled "Day Before Autumn" which is on my blog... Anyways, I explained to her how I had actually took a leaf off a tree and really thought about it... she said "you just learned something about writing that I could never have taught you"... and I think that she meant living with everything inside you, and then taking the time to reflect.

Thanks for sharing!

P.S. What's so wrong with loaded questions? I love the conversations that sprout from those!

Hey, I just read this quote yesterday somewhere else! I love it, especially the laughing part.

Thinking of you these days, first days of college life? Hope they are treating you well and you find a place among friends. :)

PS: Write, write, write!!

Hey, the Words Crafter/Becky!

You're right that it is a loaded question and that if we knew the true answer to it that we'll solve the world's problems, but you must have some reason to be going on with your life and that's what I meant. I guess I should have phrased the question better.

Anyway, you'll have another chance to answer the question in the next post, so I look forward to reading your answer.

Write on and live on!

Hello, Smita! It's a pleasure meeting you.

Sorry I couldn't leave a comment or anything. I just stopped by at your blog to follow it and read future posts, which I promise to do soon because lately I've been busy.

Write on!

Vatche said...

Hannah, you're right that it's a question with probably a million answers. I'm glad it can be your food for thought for the evening.

Write on and think on!

Vatche said...

Hey, Carolyn!

I understand that it's a loaded question and that if you have a very personal answer that you wouldn't like to share I will respect your decision.

Thank you for commenting though and write on!

Vatche said...

Journaling Woman, you're so right! We shouldn't question our lives and just live it, live it to the fullest!

Write on and live on!

Vatche said...

Tabitha, that was a very beautiful and well thought-out answer. You're right that we live to figure out ourselves and what we want. We don't want to lead "normal lives," but we want more. It's human nature to always want more.

I definitely agree with you that every day I'm trying to figure what I want from this world, this life, and I take every step gradually but with confidence.

Write on and I'm working on getting that dog!

That's just the answer I was looking for Mel!

We are here for each other and to help those who are in need. Sure, we might not know the definite answer of why we are placed on this Earth, but I think that's the closest answer there is.

Write on and live on!

Hello, Jayne, glad to see your comment!

Hmmm...an experiment, eh? Probably. Possibly. That would explain a lot of things actually. Who is pulling the strings though?

Isn't the answer to life in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy...42? I thought that was hilarious, but preposterous of course. The answer can't be a number!

Anyway, I like your answer, because it's very creative. An experiment...hmmm...I'll ponder this for some time now. Write on!

Vatche said...

Perfect answer, Rafi! (sarcasm)

That's the right answer. We are here to sit alone or in the dark, while playing video games and eating junk food 'til we are as big as balloons. Prostitutes and drugs though, they are a staple to this lifestyle!

Write on and party on, Rafi! (more sarcasm)

Vatche said...

No, THANK YOU FOR SHARING, Tsionah!

I think loaded questions are good and lead to great discussion, so there is nothing wrong with them. As for your personal answer, it is very similar to the one Mel O. Dramatic gave and the one that I most agree to. We are here to be alive and help others to live by making positive changes in their lives.

So write on and make a difference!

Hey, Terresa!

I haven't started college just yet, but I will be in two weeks and it's a scary thought really. I'm anxious and full of ambivalence.

I think you probably heard this quote somewhere a few days ago, because it was William Saroyan's birthday the day before I posted this up. So, that's probably why.

Write on!

P.S. I will definitely keep on writing for the rest of my days and so should you, because I love your stories and poems!
